Fire Department Hosts Technical Rescue Team Exercise

On Wednesday, November 14th the fire department hosted a training exercise for the MABAS 3201(Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) Technical Rescue team. The training exercise simulated a construction worker trapped in a trench under a large concrete block. The MABAS Technical Rescue Team consists of fire personnel from Addison Township, Auburn Hills, Oakland Township, City of Rochester and Rochester Hills. This exercise was held at the Auburn Hills Department of Public Services facilities on Brown Rd.

With the assistance of DPS personnel, a trench rescue scenario was created. The rescue simulated a worker installing cement pipes in an area of loose sand. The rescue was conducted by using equipment carried on specially equipped rescue vehicles from each department. An air bag lifting system was utilized with wood cribbing to secure the cement object in order to extract the victim. Each department shares a cost of the dedicated equipment, training, and personnel involved with the Technical Rescue team.

Auburn Hills’ firefighters Gary Chapman, Tony Randolph, and Mike McNamara are members of the Technical Rescue team. To qualify for the team each member must receive advanced training in trench rescue, structural collapse, high/low rope rescue and confined space rescue. Each area of expertise requires 80 hours of training to be certified at the technician level.
